Brick Wall Construction and Designs

Normally, a brick wall is a vertical construction of mortar and bricks. It is used to create the outer walls for parapets, buildings, internal partitions, retaining and free-standing walls, and so on.

The first walls in history were created using mud bricks by holding them together in thin mud slurry. This proved them to be surprisingly durable. A modern brick wall is generally made of concrete, clay, or maybe calcium-silicate bricks. The most general brick size is 215mm in length x 102.5mm in width x 65mm in height. Bricks are needed to be put together by a lime or cement mortar.

Brick walls are of various designs like zig-zag, curved, straight, and so on, as per architecture, and usually vary in thickness from 102.5 mm to upward. Brick walls can also used to construct a slope but usually need some type of support. And we can achieve this support by using concrete or steelwork backing.

In modern construction, brick walls are normally used for housing as an external part of surrounding wall construction in which they are attached to one another by masonry. The cavity often contains lagging to decrease thermal transmission through the wall.

On the contrary, Victorian brick walls are usually solid brickwork, either one-brick-thick (size given above) or one-and-a-half-brick-thick. However, on some occasions, they might be somewhat thicker, depending on the architecture.

A brick wall usually needs a base, which is whether a concrete strip or a traditional style. In the traditional style, the base of the brickwork is out on both the sides. Usually, by a third of a brick size at a time, for many courses, it increases the width.

Because clay brickwork goes through a degree of thermal expansion at the time when the temperature rises, movement joints must be applied, or else cracking might happen. Movement joints in clay brickwork can usually be placed around every 10m to 12m around the building boundary. However, free-standing walls are pretty less restrained. And thus, the spacing is normally reduced to 6m to 8m.

Walls created from calcium silicate or concrete shrink, and therefore, movement joints must set it.

Designs of Brick Walls

Designs of all brick walls, such as columns and walls, are totally based on the thinness ratio of the bricks and mortar. This ratio is said to be the effectual length deciding the thickness of the walls, unlike for a column, which is defined as a wall with a breadth four times lesser thickness than itself. It calculates the effective length of a wall; we need to consider not only its dimension together with its height but also its dimension along the length between the supports of the wall.

Brick walls with a thinness ratio of up to 6.0 are thought to be short walls, which are quite ideal. Walls with a thinness ratio of more than 24 are prohibited and unstable.
