The Airport Ecosystem Most Travelers Never Notice Until They Need It

Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) isn’t a single entity, it’s a collection of buildings, each with its very own set of rules. It’s a multi-layered system of 5 agencies, 3 terminal areas, and a plethora of services that most passengers don’t realize they need until they’re in trouble. The international terminal is run independently, as are the domestic terminal at Dhaka airport and the VVIP terminal. The Armed Police, including Immigration Police, NBR Customs, Airport Armed Police, AVSEC, and the Department of Immigration and Passport, operate within the same perimeter but under different ministries and have various duties. Knowing this ecosystem before flying or booking airport assistance in Dhaka — can make all the difference between a smooth flight and 45 minutes of asking the wrong officer for help with the wrong problem.

Five Agencies, One Terminal, Zero Overlap

HSIA is run by CAAB, but five different agencies, each with different powers and ties to different ministries, operate within it simultaneously. Each deals with a particular aspect of your trip. When you have a problem, you have to approach the wrong one, and that’s when you might not have.

The one thing people commonly miss at HSIA is asking a customs officer about immigration or an immigration officer about a lost bag. All agencies have specific jurisdiction. Understanding the functionality of each desk is the first step toward seamlessly navigating HSIA.

The Services That Only Reveal Themselves When You’re Already in Trouble

The Lost and Found section, Airport Magistrate, BMET desk for migrant workers, 24-hour call center, and AVSEC control room are part of HSIA’s services. All of these are not accessible from the arrivals belt. People generally don’t know they’re there until they require them.

What the Ecosystem Looks Like When Someone Maps It for You in Advance

It’s only at HSIA that someone’s entire job is to know how all of these pieces are linked and apply that knowledge to one passenger or family group at a time: a GLAAS Meet and Assist agent.

The agent is unaware that the VoA desk is in front of the immigration counter. The agent is unaware that the VoA desk is in front of the immigration counter.

They are aware that the BMET desk is located in departure immigration, not at check-in. They know that Lost and Found is not close to the exit doors; it is in room 15.

They are familiar with the NBR customs channel that you should contact depending on what you’re bringing. They have done each of these things thousands of times.

Standard Meet and Assist from BDT 500 per person from HSIA. Book at globalair.com.bd, WhatsApp +880 1976 333 444, or call +880 9647 222 888 at least 24 hours before your flight.

All airports have an ecosystem. That’s the one that moves through it the quickest, the one that understood it before they landed.
