If you have decided to have your sash windows renovated you probably have a number of questions that need to be answered. For example, do you need to prepare your home for the renovation, how much will it cost and how long will it take?
To give you some assurance and confidence in the process we have put together the basics below to help you understand what you need to know when renovating sash windows.
How to prepare your home
There will be a lot of activity taking place in and around the window area, so you should prepare the space to make sure it is clear and accessible for the window renovation.
Move furniture and other items that are positioned close to the window, both inside and outside, which will make it easier for the renovators to carry out their work and ensure items remain protected and undamaged.
Bear in the mind this also includes any curtains, blinds, shutters, an obscure glass film and anything else hanging in the area.. Wall decorations should also come down, such as framed pictures, as these could accidentally be affected during installation, so this helps keep them safe and protected.
How we repair a sash step by step
When repairing a sash window we generally following the steps below:
- Remove the sashes from the frame
- The installer removes the cracked glass panes before scraping away the old putty
- We clean the joints before routing out any rotten wood
- To fill any gaps we use epoxy resin and then splice in new timber
- Sanding and priming of the sash takes place next
- We can then put the glass back into place
- Final touches are added with finishing and painting
- The installer also ensures new hardware is attached, old weatherstrips are replaced, new cords or chains installed, pulleys are lubricated or replaced, weights are balanced before the sashes are put back in place within the frames
