IPTV and All the Basics You Need to Know About It

IPTV simply stands for Internet Protocol Television. In simple words, IPTV is a TV that operates on the internet using high-speed broadband internet. Contrary to traditional cable connection or satellite TV, IPTVs come with a significantly complicated network architecture. Another difference between IPTV and traditional TV is the number of available channels.

In an IPTV subscription, you can ask your provider to include a limited number of channels. You can get their subscription almost immediately. However, traditional TVs come with many channels by default. For example, my Spectrum TV subscription comes with hundreds of channels. It really comes down to what one wants. If you want to have a few channels then IPTV may be your ultimate choice.

Difference Between IPTV and Streaming Services

IPTV and streaming services are quite similar. However, as the name implies, this internet-based TV comes with TV channels as well. Streaming services, on the other hand, come with movies and TV shows more or less.

There are many companies providing IPTV services such as Spectrum, TV networks like BBC, live TVs, and third-party subscription services.

Is IPTV a Free Service?

Obviously, IPTV is not a free service. You need high internet speeds to view the channels in HD. Subscription-based M3U links are a must in order to play live TV channels. If you do not get these links then the visuals will be poor. Make sure that you get fluent internet services otherwise it’s better to stick to cable services only. Why? Because it’s not fun watching TV shows that lag a lot.

Who Provides an IPTV Subscription?

You can get an IPTV subscription easily because many companies are offering them. Almost all ISPs provide them along with their internet packages. Ask your provider to ensure your favorite channels are part of the subscription service.

Set-Top Boxes for TVs

Do note that there is a marked difference between cable TVs and IPTVs. For a cable TV to function, you only require a cable connecting to the TV. However, for IPTV you need stable internet. For them, it is mandatory to purchase a set-top box. This box translates the signals you receive over the internet into a TV-readable format. As a result, you can watch seamless and lag-free TV shows and movies.

Over a closed network system, certain cable TV providers do provide IPTVs. If you’re watching TV shows on your PC then you don’t need a set-top box.

How Does the Subscription Work?

You can run your IPTV subscription on any device that supports M3U. This means that you can run it on your TV or PC. You can also run it on applications such as VLC. A Smart TV can also function as an IPTV.
