Outdoor sports you can do in the UK

The UK may not be your first choice of destination when you think of outdoor sports, but perhaps it should be. From the stunning coastlines that offer water sports locations that will rival any of those you might find on the continent to some of the most spectacular hills and mountains you will find, and with amazing panoramic views thrown in for free, the UK has some extraordinary locations. These are all ideally suited to outdoor sports.

If you are considering taking part in any form of outdoor sport, don’t forget to plan carefully for the weather and any other conditions that you might encounter. River swimming

In recent years, river or lake swimming, sometimes referred to as wild swimming, has become increasingly popular. In fact, during the height of the pandemic, when swimming pools were still closed and the weather was a little warmer, many people tried wild swimming for the first time. This is an outdoor sport that can be undertaken all year round for the hardy. There are plenty of different places that you can visit to try river swimming and plenty of lakes that have available to swimmers. However, a word of warning about swimming in any type of unmanned outdoor water. Hillwalking

If you are looking for an outdoor sport that will give you plenty of exercises, has lots of different venues and offers you some spectacular views along the way, then hill walking is a great outdoor sport. It is perfect for the whole family. It is a good idea to make a little investment in the right equipment before you begin hill walking, but it is a very cheap sport. Suitable sturdy footwear, waterproof clothing, warm layers and of course, a rucksack to carry things in are must-have items.

Remember, the weather in the UK is quite changeable, so make sure you have a range of items with you for all eventualities. A good map, in a map cover and a compass, is also a good idea just in case you get lost.

Paddle boarding

According to Ordnance Survey, the mainland of the UK boasts a staggering 17,819km of coastline. There is more if you count the many dotted islands around the coast. This makes it an excellent destination for paddle boarding. Boards and the other equipment you will need to get into this fantastic outdoor sport can be found in a range of good outdoor and specialist sports shops. They come in a range of budgets to suit every pocket. There are plenty of different locations to try paddle boarding, although you may like to book a few lessons first if you are new to the sport.

Mountain biking

If you are looking for a sport that will allow you to explore, mountain biking is a great way to cover a lot of ground in a relatively short space of time. It’s a great workout and gives you a chance to explore locally and further afield.

There is no need to go abroad to participate in some exceptional outdoor sports, and why would you want to when we have everything you could need right here on our doorstep in the UK?
