The type of surgical procedure also depends on the implants’ shape options and their placement manner, which can differ depending on your body’s construction and lifestyle needs.  The surgeon places the implants, typically silicone and saline implants, or some alternative composite breast implants under the breast tissue or chest muscles. Implants last between 7 and 12 years.

What are breast implants?

Breast implants are medical prosthesis that serves the purpose of breast reconstruction, augmentation, or to create a physical form resembling breasts. There are three different types of implants.

Silicone implants are gel-filled implants entirely constructed of silicone and an outer shell that holds the gel. While the gel is supposed to remain within the shell, there are instances when the gel might leak. If it happens, either the gel remains within the shell or finds its way into the breast implant pocket. If the implant leaks, it might or might not collapse depending on the nature and extent of the leak and the amount of gel remaining in the shell. However, such chances of leakage are between far and few.

If you choose silicone implants for the procedure you must ensure regular checks with the doctor to check that things are in order.  However, such maintenance is not necessary for saline implants. To check the implants’ condition, you must have an ultrasound or MRI done at regular intervals, as advised by the doctor.

Saline implants – Saline implants contain a saline solution commonly known as saltwater inside a silicone shell. The amount of saline solution filled in the shell can differ according to the individual’s need as the amount of saline water impacts the firmness, feel, and shape of the breast. The body can tolerate well the saline implants, and in case of any leakage, the body absorbs the solution that helps to expel it.

Composite implants – Composite implants are different from silicone and saline implants. It contains various types of filler material: soy oil, polypropylene string, or some other synthetic material that the body can tolerate.

Since breast augmentation is a surgical procedure, you must think carefully and consult your doctor before deciding to undergo the procedure.
