Vehicle Fares

Any vehicle that may be driven or towed legally on a highway may be transported on any Alaska State ferry. shipping cars to alaska, Most ferries carry vehicles up to 60’ feet but some ports do have restrictions.

Vehicle fares are determined by the overall length and width of the vehicle. Do not attempt to estimate your vehicle length. You must accurately measure your vehicle to avoid additional charges. The ceilings on the car decks are 13′ feet 6 inches high and you are not charged by the height or weight only by the length and the width if it is over 102 inches wide.

Motorcycles

 

All motorcycles must be fully secured on the car deck using appropriate tie-downs. It is the responsibility of the motorcycle owner to bring tie-downs and to ensure the motorcycle is properly secured.

When transporting a towed trailer or vehicle, the overall connected length and width is used to determine fares. If your vehicle is 103 -107 inches wide you will be charged approximately 125% of the fare listed for the vehicle length. Vehicles 108 inches wide and over will be charged approximately 150% of the fare listed for the vehicle length. The M/V Tustumena charges a wide rate for any vehicle over 96” wide.

Do not attempt to estimate your vehicle length. Vehicles must be measured and booked accurately to ensure space availability onboard. Vehicles booked incorrectly are subject to measuring at the terminal on date of departure and will be charged for the additional length and/or width provided the additional footage is even available.

Drivers of vehicles with long overhangs are advised that, due to the large tidal range of Alaskan waters (up to 40 feet in some places), the angle of the transfer ramp may cause damage to undercarriage units such as holding tanks or plumbing. Vehicles longer than 25 feet may have trouble clearing the top of the car deck door at low tide. The Alaska Marine Highway is not responsible for damage caused by the angle of the transfer ramp.

Recreation Vehicles

 

Fares for recreational vehicles are the same as for other vehicles of the same size. However, for information purposes, these vehicles are booked under a separate code, so if you are traveling with an RV, please indicate that when you make your reservation. United States Coast Guard regulations prohibit access to the car deck while a vessel is underway, so RVs and motor homes may not be used for dining and sleeping while on an Alaska State ferry ship. Electrical hookups for vehicle refrigeration units are not available, and bottled gas containers must be turned off and sealed by an Alaska Marine Highway employee at the time of boarding.

Unaccompanied Vehicles and Commercial Equipment

Non-drivable vehicles and vehicles not accompanied by a driver will be assessed a surcharge of $50 to and from Bellingham, $20 to and from Prince Rupert, and $10 to and from all other ports. Unaccompanied vehicles cannot be shipped on the M/V Fair weather fast vehicle ferry. The Alaska Marine Highway does not provide for loading or off-loading vehicles; it is the shipper’s responsibility to provide this service. Special booking procedures are required –to make a reservation for unaccompanied or commercial equipment.

RV’s, motor homes, busses, vans, and flat-bed trucks will be limited to a maximum overhang of 6 feet past the rear axle. (6’ from the rear axle to a 12” high rear bumper)

No vehicles with a distance greater than 6 feet from the rear axle to the rear bumper will be permitted to load or unload in Gustavus. The distance from the rear bumper to the ground may not measure less than 12 inches. Box trucks with pintle hitches and lift gates attached are also restricted.

RV’s, motor homes, campers, and flat-beds may not exceed the rear axle guidelines and may not have a tow vehicle attached (i.e. small trailer, car or boat).
Vehicles with trailers will be limited to a boat trailer length of 20 feet. seattle to anchorage, Containers will also be limited to a length of 20 feet.
For truck and trailer combinations, the trailer/box portion cannot exceed 20 feet in length. This rule also applies to containers, vans, and box-trucks.
